Randel Smith, MD, FACC became interested in human performance, anatomy and physiology as a multisport athlete in high school. He eventually realized that his passion for people and fascination with the human body would be best utilized in the medical profession.
As a child, Randel was present when his grandfather experienced a heart attack and watched his father experience heart problems as a young man. This created an interested and true empathy for those suffering from heart disease. While in medical school, that interest intensified so choosing cardiology as his specialty was an easy decision. He also enjoyed the procedural aspect, including cases in the cath lab.
After a lifetime in the deep south, including being born and raised in Louisiana and over 25 years of cardiology practice in Mississippi, Randel decided to relocate to Idaho. He has greatly enjoyed all of the relationships he has formed over many ears of caring for cardiology patients. He and his patients have laughed together often and occasionally cried together, but all of those interactions have been special and have created a desire to continue to pursue a career in cardiology.
Randel has always wanted to live out west, particularly in the mountains. It was an easy decision to come to Pocatello and join Portneuf Medical Center after seeing the hospital’s commitment for a truly state-of-the-art cardiology program.
Outside of work, Randel and his wife are passionate about traveling. They have enjoyed trips to Europe and South America. His other passions include mixed martial arts, European football, and college football. He enjoys watching LSU football, baseball and women’s basketball. Randel also enjoys trail riding with his side by side.
